When is the retreat?

The Retreat is always held in the late Fall. This year, it will be Ocotober 13-15, 2017.

Where is it?

The Abundia retreat is held at the Hilton Chicago, Northbrook, in Northbrook, Illinois, about 20 mins north of Chicago. Visit our Hotel Information Page to learn all about our location.

Who attends Abundia?

Typically, Abundia is attended by women who identify as fat or as a women of size. We try to use very inclusive definitions of "women" and "female," and we welcome trans women, genderqueer women, and non-binary people who are significantly female-identified. Basically, we aren't a space for cis men, and we are "female"-focused, for as inclusive a definition of that term is possible. Attendees range in size and age, from women in their twenties to women who have retired. If you have any questions or would like to talk about your particular needs, please feel free drop us a line at info@abundia.org.

How accessible is the retreat site?

We have worked with the Hilton Chicago Northbrook to make the accommodations as accessible as possible. The retreat is held in the conference rooms on the main level. There are accessible guest rooms, with accommodations for varying degrees of mobility, including wheelchair or scooter access, shower chairs, and lower bathroom facilities. It's best to book your hotel room early and ask explicitly for the accommodations you need.

What is the tentative schedule for the weekend?

We are still working out details, so it's subject to change. You can also check our past year's schedules for an idea of programming and workshops we've held.

What should I bring?

Bring whatever you would want to have with you to make you feel at home in your room. There is wifi in the rooms and common areas. There is a fridge and microwave in each guest room, so you can keep snacks on hand if you wish. The hotel also has a good restaurant.

Most materials needed for workshops will be provided.

Check out our What To Bring page for more information!

What should I wear?

Clothing is up to you. Most women tend to dress comfortably. All sessions and activities are informal and the atmosphere is very welcoming and open. There are plenty of jeans, tee shirts, and other comfy styles.

What if I want to bring someone (friend/partner/spouse) who isn’t going to attend the workshops?

It is not a problem at all for you to bring a guest. Do let the hotel know you will have two guests in your room when you reserve it. The hotel is right at the forest preserve in Northbrook, which has lovely walking paths. There are restaurants, shopping, and so forth nearby.

What do I need to know before I attend for the first time?

Abundia is an opportunity to meet, learn, and bond with other fat women who are in various places on their self-acceptance journeys. It is a welcoming, environment, where all emotions are welcome.
